Alocasia nobilis, pink variegated. One of the most textural Alocasias in cultivation — thick, quilted leaf with sunken venation and a matte, almost leathered surface — carrying pink variegation.

The plant

Alocasia nobilis is prized for structure before colour: deeply corrugated leaves, dark green, held on short sturdy petioles, with venation pressed into the blade rather than raised above it. It is a slow, compact grower that builds character with every leaf.

The pink form adds blush to bubblegum variegation across the blade. Because pigmented tissue carries less chlorophyll, expression shifts leaf to leaf — some emerge heavily marked, others more subtly. No two plants read the same, and no single leaf predicts the next.

Care, briefly

• Light: Bright indirect, and generous with it. Pink tissue needs light to hold — but never direct sun, which burns it first.
• Water: Let the top third dry, then water thoroughly. Variegated Alocasia takes up less water than a green one — overwatering is the usual cause of loss.
• Humidity: 60%+. Low humidity shows up as crisped variegated margins before anything else.
• Mix: Airy and fast-draining — bark, perlite, a little coco. Never dense soil.
• Warmth: 20–27°C. Nothing below 15°C.
• Watch: Spider mites. Check the underside weekly — Alocasia is their first target in dry rooms.
• Pace: Slower than a green nobilis. Stable conditions beat pushing it.
