Alocasia longiloba 'Black Satun', stardust variegation. A narrow, arrow-cut blade in near-black with bright silver venation and a wine-purple reverse — dusted with fine variegated speckling across the leaf.

The plant

'Black Satun' is one of the darkest longiloba forms in cultivation. The leaf is long, sharply lobed and held upright, matte rather than glossy, with venation so pale against the blade that it reads as drawn on. The underside carries a deep purple flush that shows when the leaf is backlit.

Stardust is the speckled expression: variegation scattered as fine flecks rather than blocked sectors. On a blade this dark the effect is exactly what the name suggests — and unlike sectorial variegation, speckling tends to distribute more evenly across new growth rather than throwing whole white leaves.

Care, briefly

• Light: Bright indirect. Dark blades read best in strong light but scorch in direct sun.
• Water: Let the top third dry, then water thoroughly. Longiloba resents both drought and standing wet — even moisture, never soggy.
• Humidity: 60%+. Crisped margins are the first sign it is too dry.
• Mix: Airy and fast-draining — bark, perlite, pumice.
• Warmth: 20–27°C. Nothing below 15°C.
• Watch: Spider mites on the leaf underside. Check weekly in dry rooms.
• Dormancy: Longiloba may slow or rest through winter. Keep the rhizome warm and barely moist and it pushes again.
