Anthurium 'Darkest Panama' (Goliath), variegated. One of the darkest velvets in the hobby, near black and bullate, here carrying visible variegation. This is an exceptional plant, and not one that comes along often.
The cultivar
Anthurium 'Darkest Panama', also known as 'Goliath', is one of the most sought after dark velvet Anthuriums in cultivation. It is grown for colour above all: deep green to near black velvet blades, rounded and bullate, crossed with fine veins. The name says it plainly, this is about as dark as velvet Anthurium gets. It traces to top growers in Indonesia and sits behind many of the elite dark velvet crosses on the market.
On its own, Darkest Panama is already a top shelf plant. This specimen carries variegation on top of that near black base, and the contrast is the whole story. Variegation is guaranteed on this plant. The exact pattern, colour and balance shift leaf to leaf as it grows, so every new leaf is its own.

Care, briefly
- Light: Bright indirect, and generous. The green carries the variegation and light holds the contrast. Direct sun scorches the pale sectors.
- Water: Lightly and evenly moist, never wet, letting the surface just dry between waterings. Keep water off the velvet.
- Warmth: 20 to 25°C and stable. With velvet Anthuriums, steady warmth matters more than chasing humidity. No cold draughts, nothing below 15°C.
- Humidity: 65%+ suits a variegated velvet, but consistent warmth and airflow matter more.
- Mix: Airy, chunky epiphytic mix (bark, perlite and charcoal), fast draining.
- Pace: A slow, deliberate grower, slower still with heavy variegation. New leaves emerge dark and harden over a couple of weeks. Give it time.
