Alocasia longiloba 'Aurea' | High Variegated, 1 Leaf
Every figure here describes the specimen in the photographs as it is today, not the mother plant.
★ Collector Specimen · One Plant
The exact plant photographed. Variegation visible on its current leaf.
Alocasia longiloba aurea. One leaf, high grade variegation, visible roots, and the blade is already starting to take the elongated longiloba shape.
The plant
Longiloba is the narrow, arrow shaped Alocasia: long dark blades with bright silver white venation and a stiff, upright habit. Aurea is the variegated selection from that line.
Young longiloba start out rounder and stretch as they mature, so watching the blade elongate is part of growing one out. On this plant that shift has already begun, which tells you it is settled and pushing properly.
This specimen

- Form: Starting to take the elongated adult shape
- Roots: Visible
- Pot: 5cm

Care, briefly
- Light: Bright indirect, never direct. Variegated tissue scorches before green does, and good light is what keeps the pattern coming through on new leaves.
- Water: Evenly moist, never wet. Alocasia sulk fast in soggy mix.
- Warmth: 20 to 26°C and stable. No cold draughts, nothing below 15°C.
- Mix: Airy, chunky and fast draining. Semi hydro works well for this genus.
- Pace: A one leaf plant in a 5cm pot, so let the roots fill in before sizing up. Alocasia trade leaves as they settle, which is normal, not a problem.
