Alocasia to Anthurium
You already know how to do this.
If you collect rare Alocasia, you have already built every instinct an Anthurium needs. Most people cross over later than they meant to, usually because they assumed it was a bigger step than it is.
The overlap
Same instinct, shorter step than you think.
The collecting logic transfers completely. The horticulture transfers mostly, and the handful of differences are things you can learn in an afternoon rather than a season.

- Reading variegationJudging whether a pattern is stable, sectoral, or about to revert is the same skill on both. If you can look at an Alocasia and tell what the next leaf will probably do, you can already do it here.
- Caring about lineageKnowing which grower a plant came from, and refusing the ones nobody can trace. Anthurium simply takes that further, down to named clones collected in the 1980s.
- Buying one, not tenBoth reward the collector who waits for the right specimen instead of filling a shelf. Neither rewards volume. You already know how to wait.
- Warmth, light and airflowThe conditions that keep a rare Alocasia happy are the conditions a velvet Anthurium wants. If you built a setup for one, it already works for the other.
What is different
- No dormancyNo corms, no winter disappearance, no wondering whether it died or is resting. This is the part most people enjoy most about the switch.
- Slower, and worth itAn Alocasia can throw a leaf a fortnight. A velvet Anthurium takes four to eight weeks and then holds that leaf for years. Fewer events, each one permanent.
- Humidity matters moreAlocasia tolerate a dry room and complain about it. Velvet Anthurium mark instead. Below roughly 60 percent you will see it on the leaf, and it does not grow out.
- Roots want airChunky substrate, never dense peat. Coming from Alocasia this is the one habit worth unlearning, and it takes about a week.
Why now
Where the interesting work is happening.
Anthurium breeding is young in a way Alocasia is not. Crosses that did not exist five years ago are being made right now, by people you can name, and the good ones still move one plant at a time. A collection you start this year can hold plants that are genuinely early rather than late, which is a feeling most Alocasia collectors remember and miss.
The provenance runs deeper too. A velvet Anthurium can usually be traced to a specific clone, from a specific place, collected by a specific person. Fort Sherman was collected in the 1980s at the Caribbean end of the Panama Canal. Antolakii came out of the Guna Yala highlands of eastern Panama and was only formally described in recent years. That history is part of what you are buying.
Then there is the thing nobody mentions until they have both. Alocasia live in cycles. They grow, they drop, they rest, they start again, and a good deal of what you grew last year is simply gone. A velvet Anthurium accumulates instead. Each leaf holds for years, so a three year old plant is everything it has ever done, standing there at once.
How to judge one
What collectors actually look at.
This is the part that takes the longest to pick up, and the part that changes what you are willing to pay for. In Alocasia, variegation and size carry most of the value. In Anthurium they are two criteria out of seven, and the other five are where collectors get particular.

01 Variegation Start where you already know, but the palette is wider. +
You can already read this one, so start here. What differs is the range: alongside the cream and white you are used to, Anthurium throws aurea and yellow, rusty orange, peach, apricot and true pink. The warm tones are rarer and priced accordingly. What matters is whether the pattern is sectoral and has held across the last few leaves, not how much of it appears in one photograph.
02 Venation The trait Anthurium collectors argue about most. +
This is the one Alocasia rarely trains you to see, and it is where a great deal of the value sits. Look at contrast, at how wide the veins run, and at whether they stay even out to the leaf edge or go patchy. Silver and white are standard. Gold, copper and red are rarer and come from specific lines, so venation colour often tells you the parentage before the label does.
03 The sinus The gap at the base, and whether it has ears. +
The sinus is where the two basal lobes meet at the top of the leaf. Some plants close it completely so the blade reads as a smooth ellipse, others open it wide with pronounced lobes, the ears. Forgetii closes it, papillilaminum opens it, and a hybrid lands somewhere between the two. Once you can see it, you can read a plant's parents without being told them.
04 Texture Velvet, glossy, bullate or flat. +
Run the light across the leaf rather than straight at it. Velvet absorbs light and reads matte, glossy throws it back, and bullate means the tissue puckers between the veins so the surface looks quilted. A heavily bullate velvet leaf is the hardest thing in this genus to photograph and the easiest to fall for in person, which is why some plants look ordinary online and extraordinary on a shelf.
05 Leaf shape The outline is a trait, not a container. +
Here the shape is chosen, not incidental. Long and strap-like, broad and heart-shaped, or almost perfectly round are all deliberate outcomes of a cross. Decide which outline you actually like before you look at anything else, because it is set by the genetics and will not change as the plant matures.
06 Substance and size How thick the leaf feels, and how big it will get. +
Substance is how thick and firm the leaf is, and it decides whether a large leaf holds itself or flops. Final size follows the parents, so a magnificum or warocqueanum cross will outgrow a carlablackiae one considerably. A young plant tells you almost nothing about how big it ends up, which is why the parentage matters more than the pot size in front of you.
07 Lineage Who made it, and whether anyone can point at the mother. +
Who made the cross, which specific clone was used, and whether the mother plant can actually be shown to you. Anthurium goes further with this than almost any other genus in the hobby, down to named collections from the 1980s. A plant with a traceable line holds its value. A plant labelled only by its cross, with no clone and no source, does not.
Between us
You have already spent a month wondering whether an Alocasia was dead or just resting. Nothing on this page is scarier than that.
None of these are worth much on their own. A plant with beautiful venation and a floppy leaf is a disappointment, and so is a heavily variegated one with no shape. What you are looking for is a specimen where several of them land at once.
An Alocasia resets. An Anthurium accumulates. After a few years that is the difference between a plant you keep restarting and a plant you have actually built.
Where to start
Not with the pink one.
The instinct is to buy the most variegated plant on the page. Coming from Alocasia that instinct is usually wrong here, because pink and cream tissue carries no chlorophyll, and a plant that is seventy percent pigment is a project rather than a purchase.
Start with something that will forgive its first winter with you. This is the order we would actually recommend.
