Anthurium (Papillilaminum × Night Dragon) × Guna Yala. A high variegated clone from our mother plant Nyx (M23), gold flecking scattered across dark velvet, new growth coming in coppery red.

The mother

Nyx (M23) is one of our in house mother plants, and one of the oldest here, on the bench since early 2025. Papillilaminum gives the narrow, elongated blade and the deep midrib. Night Dragon gives the darkness. Guna Yala brings the substance and the heavy vein structure that reads from the side.

Her variegation is speckled rather than sectoral, gold flecking scattered across a dark green field, denser on some leaves and sparser on others. This is a clone taken directly from her, so it follows her genetics. New leaves emerge coppery red and glossy, then harden into the speckled green over the following weeks. Variegation is guaranteed on this plant. The exact pattern shifts leaf to leaf, so no two read the same.

Care, briefly

• Light: Bright indirect, never direct, which scorches the velvet and the gold. Good light keeps the flecking crisp.
• Water: Lightly and evenly moist, never wet, letting the surface just dry between waterings. Keep water off the velvet.
• Warmth: 20 to 25°C and stable. With velvet Anthuriums, steady warmth matters more than chasing humidity. No cold draughts, nothing below 15°C.
• Humidity: 65%+ suits a variegated velvet, but consistent warmth and airflow matter more.
• Mix: Airy, chunky epiphytic mix (bark, perlite and charcoal), fast draining.
• Pace: A single leaf baby with strong roots, so it is off to a good start. New leaves emerge coppery and harden over a couple of weeks. Give it time.
